am Shiraz 2002

“Our Shiraz Cap Classique made a very loud debut while the 2001 Sauvignon Blanc cleaned up at the cultivar competitions. We had a very rainy winter which broke the dry years.”

Tasting Notes

always an interesting mixture of flavours, from blueberry pie to freshly worked leather and those fresh mushroom - peat, delicate smokiness suggestions.......pure shiraz fruit with salty liquorice.......meaty soft biltong........,dried, mixed herbs.....the normal nitida John West tinned cherries but interestingly with sundried black olives, not jammy but nice sweetness.....the pepper is soft and white, sweet cigar, sweet tobacco a laphroig of a wine....very masculine

Winemaker Comments

Just 900 cases available of this stunner. Our lovely white peppery nose and blockbuster fruit of the 1997 is refound here. Interestingly, this wine is made from vineyards in just their 3rd harvest. Mostly picked before the heat came, even so the grapes looked ugly but fortunately the flavours were unexpectedly lekker. We stay away from the trendy heavy- (often American oak) wooded approach and only use 2nd fill barrels. 100% open fermenter, cap punched through every 4 hours & fermented at 30 degrees. This is a more-ish food wine, chameleon-like it just works with anything.
